SAFETY NOTICE

This information letter is sent out to all Muir Matheson Ltd Clients who have an IM146 or SO/8 anemometer installed on one or more offshore installations. Our files indicate that you have purchased such instruments in the past.
We have been advised of a near miss on a Client offshore installation, a review into the safety of the IM146 and SO/8 anemometers has been carried out.

The following conclusions and recommendations have been reached:

1. The cardinal point arms for indicating N, E, S and W can suffer from fatigue, particularly after continued exposure to high winds, and can shear off. Due to the location of these sensors, (principally the drilling derrick), this represents a potential hazard.

2. Muir Matheson Ltd. recommends that the cardinal point arms be removed from the sensor at the earliest opportunity. When the instrument is to be calibrated the arms should be installed during the calibration process and subsequently removed on completion of the testing.

3. The cardinal arms are intrinsic to the calibration of the sensor and we would ask that if you (the client) are to remove the arms then they should be kept for any calibration checks that may be required.

4. The arms may be suffering from low level vibration or may be shearing off in high winds. We would be grateful to receive any local knowledge about vibration levels or wind shear on specific sites for our files and to raise awareness of the potential risk.

5. In future during maintenance visits offshore Muir Matheson personnel will be instructed to remove the cardinal point arms from the sensors on completion of the calibration checks and pass them to installation personnel for safe storage.

The SO/8 wind speed and direction sensor has an excellent safety record on offshore installations, this is the first time we have had an incident of this kind.

Muir Matheson Ltd wants to ensure high standards of Health and Safety at all times and we appreciate your co-operation in this matter.

A copy of the general arrangement of the equipment in question is available on this website
