Locate a wind sensor on a drilling derrick or other identified structure whilst incurring minimal recabling costs to the customer. From a measurement point of view the sensor needs to be located at a height clear of the surrounding infrastructure to achieve 360 degrees of free wind movement. The drilling derrick or perhaps flare stack are the obvious places except that they are both Hazardous Areas, also add in the problem of cabling over a catenary onto an expendable derrick and the normal hard wired solution becomes prohibitively expensive.
Working with our suppliers and partners Muir Matheson have developed an ATEX compliant wireless wind sensor system, which allows the customer to freely locate the sensors wherever they can find power without incurring platform cabling costs. The system has been fitted to several installations (Jack up drilling rigs and fixed platforms) and continues to operate successfully with a minimum amount of routine maintenance.
