AWOS uses an internal LAN to handle communications between workstations and servers. This LAN is kept isolated from all other networks and although this ensures the security of meteorological data and compliance with CAA regulation it can prevent distribution of valuable data to other interested parties.
Airbrief is a software application which allows display of the ATIS broadcast generated by AWOS via the internet. It is designed to assist aircrew and operations not connected to AWOS to obtain timely information and to relieve air traffic of the need to disseminate data.
Airbrief makes use of Safe Exchange – a product that allows secure one way data flow from AWOS while preventing data flow into AWOS. Safe Exchange is an integral part of Air Brief but it can be supplied separately where the customer already has applications that can use AWOS data and simply requires an intrinsically safe interface.
